1 War of 1812 Causes Think-Pair-Share
Read over your worksheet independently. Mark questions you are confident you have correct with a “+”, and mark ones you are unsure of with a You will have 2 minutes to do this. After this time, you will match up with a partner to share your marks for 4 minutes. You will then have time to try and answer your ‘s together. We will then go over any remaining questions with ’s.

3 A. Election of 1796 1) Who won the election? 2) How much did he win by? 3) What states voted for which candidates (think grouping of states)?

4 B. XYZ Affair Adams sent negotiators to France to ease the tensions between the two countries. French refused to negotiate until Americans “paid tribute” – bribes and a war loan. America refuses, releases “XYZ Report” to let people know what happened. How did it impact the relationship with France?

5 C. Alien and Sedition Acts
Four laws total: 1st: Changed the immigrant wait time for voting from 5 years to 14 years 2nd and 3rd: President can deport any alien considered dangerous to national security 4th: Illegal to say anything false or malicious about the federal government in a newspaper Meant you couldn’t criticize public officials

6 C. Alien and Sedition Acts
The Alien and Sedition Acts targeted immigrants and newspaper publishers. How did the Democratic- Republicans feel about the laws? How did the Federalists feel about the law?

7 D. Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions
Written by Democratic-Republicans in response to the Alien and Sedition Acts. Introduced the doctrine of “nullification” – a state has the right to declare a law invalid/it doesn’t apply to them if they think it’s unconstitutional. Which level of government would have more power under this idea? How did this impact relationships between the states?

8 Independent Practice Write a letter to your local newspaper about who you would like to vote for in the next election – John Adams or Thomas Jefferson. Using factual events and evidence that explains your choice. Your letter should be 6-8 sentences.
