1.1 The Language of Motion
3
The player’s position is 5
The player’s position is 5.0 m east of the reference point (center ice). The arrow indicates that position is a vector quantity, which includes both magnitude and direction. 3:10
4
The player moves a distance of 20.0 m.
The symbol without an arrow and no direction indicates that distance is a scalar quantity. The player’s final position is now 25.0 m east of the reference point.
5
Δ = the Greek letter delta , which means “change in”
The player’s position has now changed. A change in position is called displacement. Δ = the Greek letter delta , which means “change in” Displacement is another example of a vector quantity.
6
Vector Sign Conventions
When using vector quantities in formulas, we do not write the directions using words. Instead, we use positive (+) and negative (–) signs. positive directions negative directions forward backward up down right left east west north south
7
The person begins 5.0 m [W] of the bus stop sign.
Δd = 5.0 m m = (+10.0 m) – (–5.0 m) Δd = m = m This person travelled a distance of 15.0 m and her displacement is 15.0 m east.
