1 Dividing Fractions

2 Unit 3 – Using Models to Divide Whole Numbers by Fractions

3 Dividing Fractions Using Models Example
Divide using models. 4 ÷ 2 3 6 Procedure Step 1 – Draw rectangular boxes to represent the dividend (first number) Step 2 – Draw a rectangular box to represent the divisor (second number) Step 3 – Cut up the first set of rectangles into the fractional size of the second rectangle Step 4 – Make as many groups the size of the second rectangle as you can from the first rectangles Step 5 – Count the groups for the final answer.

4 Dividing Fractions Using Models Example
Divide using models. 2 ÷ 2 5 5

5 Dividing Fractions Using Models Independent Practice
Divide using models. 2 ÷ ÷ 3 4 4

6 Dividing Fractions With Remainders Using Models Example
Divide using models. 6 ÷ 4 5 7 1 2 There is a remainder because there are not four boxes to make a circle around. There are only two leftover out of 4 needed to make a group. 2 out of 4 is ½.

7 Dividing Fractions With Remainders Using Models Example
Divide using models. 3 ÷ 2 3 4 1 2 There is a remainder because there are not two boxes to make a circle around. There is only 1 leftover out of 2 needed to make a group. 1 out of 2 is ½.
