1 A few things to consider….
2 person scenes A few things to consider….

2 DIALOGUE A dialogue is usually a conversation between two people

3 Cause and effect Both people must give and take – sometimes you cause something to be said or done, and sometimes you need to react to something that has been said or done, which will show the desired effect to the audience You will take turns with your partner “causing” and reacting

4 Subtext Between the lines Gestures and facial expressions
Oh Harold - you have to try to say the lines many different ways to see if there is possible subtext that you are missing. Careful! Don’t lose sight of the overall objective of the scene

5 Relationship Show, not tell As actors AND as characters
The most interesting part of watching a dialogue is seeing the relationship between 2 people, especially if that relationship changes in some way during the scene Don’t rely on the script, you have to be creative

6 Objective Overall scene – where is it going? Character 1 Character 2
Establish the objectives of the scene early on Knowing your objective(s) changes how you say your lines and plan your blocking Everyone wants something from someone else (remember that doesn’t have to be a bad thing)

7 Movement Do something! – rarely do two people just stare at each other while they have a conversation Every movement, and lack of movement, sends a message - be aware!
