Conclusion: the summary and interpretation of experimental results at the end of a lab write up

9. Purpose
Experiments are only meaningful if you can interpret data & convey its meaning to your audience in a clear and concise manner

10. Conclusion Conclusion should contain 4 components: State CLAIMS
Use NUMERICAL EVIDENCE to justify the claims
RESTATE HYPOTHESIS – reject or accept based on evidence
MAKE INFERENCES using prior knowledge
Tell what data means

11. Observation vs. Inference
Observation – description of natural structures and processes
Can involve 5 senses – seen, tasted, heard, touched, or smelled
Measurements taken with scientific tools (pH meter, thermometer, balance, etc.)
Inferences – conclusions based on observations
Goes beyond what is directly sensed or measured
Provides meaning to the observation based on prior knowledge
