Music Mountain Let’s take a look at Music Mountain.
2
Top High If I want to climb a mountain, where do I start from (bottom). If I climb to the top of the mountain, am I going up or down the mountain? Let’s figure out where the bottom of the mountain of the mountain is. Look for the top of the mountain. Which one is the high part of the mountain? The low? (click) Bottom Low
3
Small High Low Large At the small, high side, look how wide the mountain is (click). At the low, large side, see how wide the mountain is (click).) (I also pick up a xylo bar about the same size as the arrows to show the kids. It happens that the red boomwhackers also fit the arrows, at least on my TV. VERY cool.) (click)
4
Top High Let’s review and read these words. (Point to the word and let the students read them.) (This is a chance to check their understanding of the vocabulary.) (click) Bottom Low
5
DOWN UP Which way does this arrow go? (click) (Click for the answer) From the bottom to the top is which way? How about this arrow (click) ? (Click to reveal answer)
6
C B DOWN UP A G F E D C Okay, I’ve covered up Music Mountain with some xylophone bars. Can you still see the mountain? Do you see a pattern with the letters? (Let them notice it.) Which way does this arrow go? (click) (after response, click for “up”). Which way does this arrow go? (click) (after response, click for “down”). Repeat for DOWN.
7
UP DOWN E D C What if there are only 3 bars? Which way does this arrow go? (click) (click for up) Which way does this arrow go? (click) (click for down)
8
C UP OR DOWN ? D E F I turned the mountain sideways. Find the top of the mountain….find the bottom. Notice the pattern of the letters. How is it like the one before? (click to previous slide to remind them if desired) Okay, which way is THIS arrow going, UP or DOWN? Let’s see…. (cue UP). (Click once to remove arrow and again to remove oval.) Now which way is this arrow going? (cue) (Usually they cheer at this point.) Now are you ready for a tricky one?!?
9
UP OR DOWN ? C D E F G A B C D E Look at this - Music Mountain is gone, but can you remember where it used to be? (click back to previous slide to show them. When they “get it’, continue.) Which way does this arrow go? and this one? NOTE: at this point, I get out an octave of boomwhackers and ask the class to arrange them in order from low to high. “Which boomie is at the bottom of the mountain? Will it be high or low?” etc.

C Pentatonic C D E G A C D E Just an extra slide to show that you can go up and down AND low and high even if some of the bars are missing….kinda like a first grader’s missing teeth (they love it when I say that). Use your finger to point. No arrows this time.
