1 Writing the Summary Analysis

2 Everything is an argument.
It may not look like it or sound like it, but it is:

3 The clothes you wear, the music you listen to, the way you carry yourself in the hallway – all of these are expressions that make claims about who you are.

4 The Assignment Read an article/essay of about 500 words.
Create an MLA citation for the article. Summarize the article in 25 words or fewer. Write a position paragraph that makes a claim about the article. The paragraph includes the following: A clear topic sentence – the CLAIM Quoted/paraphrased evidence from the article – the GROUNDS Explanation that connects the grounds to the claim – the BACKING

5 The Summary should include the following:
A present tense, active voice summary that reflects the full intent of the article, and An identification of the type of evidence used by the author: anecdotes, statistics, facts, quotes, expert testimony/opinion, or legal precedents.

6 Coaching Points Start the summary with the author’s last name. The author is speaking, not the article. The first verb in the summary is a great place to focus on tone and to emphasize the value of precision.

7 The Claim Like the European explorers of the Renaissance, the claim shows ownership of a position on the topic you take. The tricky part is that you must use the textual evidence in the article. You must follow the evidence, even if it does not fit your personal opinion.

8 Coaching Points The goal is to make an A on the assignment, not change the world. You must evaluate the evidence in the article in order to determine if the claim can be supported. Unforgivable sins: I think and I believe. State the claim as a fact. Be confident.

9 Grounds The is where you cite textual evidence. Use the author’s information to prove your claim through paraphrasing and quoting. Because this is a paragraph and not an essay, it is essential that you use the best information and only that information that supports the claim. Ignore information that does not support the claim.

10 Coaching Point Fact and truth are two different concepts. I Encourage students to interpret facts in multiple ways. When you move to argumentation essays, this will help you find the counter-argument and dismantle it.

11 Backing This is the key element and probably the toughest element for most of you. This is where you connect the grounds to the claim and explain how you understand the connection.

12 Coaching Point The connection should be direct. What this means is ….
As a result, …. In other words, …. Because of this, … To put it another way…. Consequently, …. In the same way, ….

13 Conclusion The conclusion should reference the claim. If possible, it should reflect how the evidence supports the claim. Unforgivable sins: In conclusion, Lastly, Finally, I have shown, To sum up, and In Closing.

14 The Colors Highlight the following: Claim – yellow Grounds – green Backing – blue Conclusion - yellow

15 Collaborative Roles In your group of four, send your papers successively to the left until each has her/his own paper. Everyone checks for the same information on each paper and provides feedback. Checks the MLA citation and the summary. Count the words. Checks the claim and conclusion. Checks for grounds. Checks for backing. You will receive your own paper back with feedback for revision.
