PLANS II Plankton and Nutrient Studies for the Chesapeake Bay
2
What is PLANS II A NOAA-funded collaboration between:
CBNERR Morgan State University, PEARL The Society for Ocean Sciences An inquiry-based learning program to build an understanding of the sources, impacts and possible control strategies for nutrient enrichment of the Chesapeake Bay and Patuxent River
3
Nutrient Enrichment of the Chesapeake Bay
4
Nutrient Enrichment of the Chesapeake Bay
What is the effect of nutrient enrichment on the growth of algae? What are the ecosystem consequences of this increased algal growth? What are some local sources of nutrients that could enter the Bay?
5
Preparation Phase Introduction the concept of Nutrient Enrichment
Design an Enrichment Bioassay (Experiment) Set up an initial Bioassay & monitor it for 1-3 weeks
6
Action Phase Collect potential nutrient source samples (soil or water) from a site near the school. Set up another Bioassay with nutrient samples & monitor it 1-3 weeks
7
Reflection Phase Review / analyze data from both Bioassays
Employ appropriate web resources to develop a local and regional perspective to nutrient sources Participate in Capstone Activities
8
Capstone The PLANS Symposium All classes participate
Attendees will include, students, educators, policy makers, scientists, media, the public Keynote science speaker Poster presentation Photo competition
