2. Assignment Overview
Write an essay about your Egyptian artifact that includes two paragraphs:
Paragraph 1: a description of the artifact based on your own observations.  Yesterday’s lesson
Paragraph 2: a summary of the secondary source information about the artifact.  Today’s lesson

3. Include a Topic Sentence
You also need a topic sentence for your 2nd paragraph.
Summarize what the secondary source says about the artifact.
Example: “The Great Pyramid was built as a tomb for the pharaoh named Khufu”.

4. Use Your Own Words
Do not copy directly from the source article. This is known as plagiarism.
If you want to use a direct quotation:
Use “quotation marks”.
Keep it short (less than 10 words).

5. Cite your source
You need to tell the reader where you found your secondary source information. You can use:
“According to Encyclopedia Britannica…”
“Information on Encyclopedia Britannica states that…”
Avoid: “I got my information from…”

7. Example Descriptive Paragraph

8. Example Summary Paragraph
The obelisk at Luxor has many characteristics that show its close relationship to the Sun god named Ra. First, according to the book titled The Hieroglyphs of Ancient Egypt, one of the earliest examples of an obelisk was created in the city named Heliopolis and dedicated to Ra. Additionally, the obelisk shape is associated with the Sun. The top of the obelisk was once covered in an alloy of gold and silver, which would have brightly reflected the sunlight. Therefore, many historians think that the obelisk was a symbol of the Sun’s rays. Finally, there are baboon sculptures at the bottom of the obelisk. Baboons like to warm themselves in the morning sun, so Egyptians considered them to be a symbol of the sunrise.

While you wait for the computer to login: write your topic sentence on the back of your artifact notes.

Look in your History folder for your file titled “Egyptian Artifact Essay”. Or, look in “Recent”.
Finish your first paragraph, begin writing your 2nd paragraph.
