1 News from the McDonald Observatory Planet Search
Michael Endl “Alm Seminar” TLS Tautenburg, Sep.9th 2009

2 2.7 m telescope / Tull spectrograph:
Kepler Follow Up search for Jupiter analogs Hobby-Eberly Telescope / HRS: FGK stars (1 new planet)‏ M dwarfs (1 new planet / 1 planet shrank)‏ Keck 1 / HIRES: CoRoT Follow Up (RM effect)‏

3 2.7 m telescope / Tull spectrograph:
Kepler Follow Up search for Jupiter analogs

4 HD 34445 b: a long-periodic gas giant discovered independently
by California team (KECK/HIRES) and HET/HRS G0 V = 7.31 [Fe/H] = M = 1.07 M Sun Teff = K log g = v sin i = km/s Howard et al. 2009, submitted

5 GJ 179 b: a long-periodic gas giant orbiting a faint M dwarf
discovered by California team (KECK/HIRES) and with some help from HET/HRS M3.5 V = 11.96 [Fe/H] = M = M Sun Teff = K log g = 4.83 v sin i < 1.5 km/s d = 12.5 pc Howard et al. 2009, submitted

6 The Incredibly Shrinking Planet around GJ 176:

8 The Incredibly Shrinking Planet around GJ 176:
Endl et al. 2008 HARPS! Forveille et al. 2009

9 The Incredibly Shrinking Planet around GJ 176:
M3.5 V = 11.96 [Fe/H] = M = M Sun Teff = K log g = 4.83 v sin i < 1.5 km/s d = 12.5 pc Howard et al. 2009, submitted

10 2009 Jan (Bill & Stuart): HIRES observations of Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect of CoRoT-1 RM anomaly HARPS data : F. Bouchy Model fit: F. Pont

11 2009 Jan (Bill & Stuart): HIRES observations of Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect of CoRoT-1 Lambda ~ 80 deg! HARPS data : F. Bouchy Model fit: F. Pont

12 2009 Jun 30 / Jul 01 (Michael & Phillip):
HIRES radial velocity observations of 8 new candidates All data reduced and communicated to the CoRoT Follow-up group Example: RM anomaly red points = HIRES data dashed line = tentative RV orbit This star is a rapid rotator, which explains the large error bars and the large amplitude of the observed RM anomaly Again, the shape of the RM effect indicates orbital misalignment!

13 2009 Jun 30 / Jul 01 (Michael & Phillip):

14 2009 Jun 30 / Jul 01 (Michael & Phillip):
