Background The development of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for the treatment of HIV is one of the greatest achievements of modern medicine.

Improving Life Expectancy but Gap Persists
HIV- Controls HIV+ Well-treated: Implies HIV-infected individuals with CD4 cell count >350 cells per microliter and HIV RNA <500 copies per milliliter after 1 year of cART. Legarth/Obel, JAIDS, 2016 ~9y shorter life expectancy even among those with no comorbidity
