The beauty of this is that they are all the same thing.
Work and Energy The beauty of this is that they are all the same thing.
2
I. Work Earlier we discussed that a Force applied in a certain amount of time is equal to the Impulse on that object. What if the Force is being applied over a certain amount of displacement? That is called WORK.
3
B. What is work? It is a constant Force acting in the direction of the displacement. Force and displacement MUST be in the same direction in order for there to be Work done. W=F*d (only if they are in the same dir.) W = F*d(cosθ) (NOT same direction) Measures in Joules (J)
4
C. When it is not in the same direction.
So in this case you must use W=F*d(cosΘ) Θ d
5
II. Kinetic Energy Moving Energy KE = 1/2mv2 Measured in Joules (J)
ANYTHING moving has it. KE = 1/2mv2 Measured in Joules (J)
6
III. Potential Energy Stored energy due to gravity. PE = mgh
Also called Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE). PE = mgh Measured in Joules (J) How much work does it take to lift a 4 kg object 10 m? How much PE does it have?
7
IV. Law of Conservation of Energy.
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred to a different form. Ex. Rollercoaster Ex. Pendulum It is a LAW. W=∆KE=∆PE Also called the Work/Energy Theorem
8
V. POWER P = W/t P = F(d/t) P=F*v Measured in Watts (W)
