To build the Aswan High Dam, Nasser first secured financial support from the British and the U.S. in 1956. In the same year he nationalized the Suez Canal despite the interests of the British and French.

When the deal fell through with the U.S. and British he turned to the Soviet Union to build the dam. In 1968, the Aswan High Dam became fully operational, providing the power that fueled Egypt’s economy.
