1 Married For Life

2 5 Couples Their combined years of marriage at the time the article was written were 307 years! This sermon has quotes from these couples and more importantly, quotes from God’s Word

3 What made these marriages last 307 years?
The Question: What made these marriages last 307 years?

4 1. Devotion To Christ & The Church
“We went into marriage knowing both were going to live as Christians”

5 Mt. 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

6 Lk. 1:6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

7 2. Be Patient With The Other’s Failings
“You can’t let everything be for ‘me’. You have to look out for the other person too.”

8 1 Cor. 13:4 4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up

9 3. Cooperate And Communicate
One couple was asked, “how did you make it more than 60 years”? Jokingly the husband said, “I mind pretty well”. Then he added, “and she does to!”

10 Eph. 5:21 “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” Submitting = “the opposite of prideful self-interest. To be submissive is to be humble.” Bob Winton

11 3. Cooperate And Communicate
“Learn to work together” 1 Pet. 3:7 “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.”

12 4. Persevere When Days Are Dark
“You have to live one day at a time. You can’t let things bother you. Let it roll off. Give and take.”

13 4. Persevere When Days Are Dark
“…when one way does not work, try another! Never consider divorce as an option! Have faith that you can make it with God’s help. Learn to look beyond the disappointments, for they will come.

14 4. Persevere When Days Are Dark
Everything will not turn out like you want. Go on anyway!”

15 Phil. 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

16 5. Love Each Other Without Reserve
“Marry for love, not for infatuation. Only genuine love will stand time’s test….” “Love is like a garden, it must be cultivated. Once the weeds take over, it is hard to bear fruit.” A. Webster

17 Eph. 5:28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

18 Titus 2:4-5 “That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their childrenTo be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”

19 6. Don’t Trust In Material Things
Lk. 12:15 “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”

20 1 Tim. 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

21 Ps. 37:16 A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.

22 7. Spend Time Together “An important part of our marriage has been spending time together. Whatever one wanted to do, the other would go along with it. We both learned to like things along the way”

23 Mt. 19:5 “And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?” Leave = to go away from Cleave = to join fast together; to glue; to cement

24 7. Spend Time Together “Spend time physically working together. Work in the yard, garden, and house. This builds a strong marriage.”

25 8. Trust In The Lord And Each Other
“Don’t forget to pray!”

26 Prov. 3:5-7 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

27 Mt. 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder

28 8. Trust In The Lord And Each Other
“An old preacher used to say it this way, ‘Marriage is for better, for worse, until they take you away in a big, black hearse’” A. Webster
