Ad hoc modules yearly added to the LFS ‘Employment of disabled people’: 2002 and 2011 Attempt to implement the new disability concept in 2011

4 Development context - EDSIM
ESTAT project ‘European Disability Measurement‘ Aim: developing a programme for further improvement of measurement instruments on disability in surveys and for the improvement of comparability of disability data Conclusions: 2 different tracks are necessary for the development of disability statistics at EU level: Track A: general disability items (MEHM) Track B: specific disability items, including environment and participation (EHIS and EDSIM)

Aims: to provide information on the situation on the labour market of disabled people and to compare it with the one of non disabled people Content: Health problems and difficulties in basic activities Limitations in work caused by health problems/difficulties in basic activities Special assistance needed or used by people with health problems/difficulties in basic activities Limitations in work because of other reasons

8 Conceptual differences between the 2 modules
LFS AHM: does not intend to measure the prevalence and burden of disability more oriented to the medical concept of disability EDSIM: designed to measure disability according to the ICF definition allows examining the relationship between the different concepts of disability Disability being the limitations in day to day activities caused by a health problem; Disability being difficulties in carrying out basic activities (ADL); possibly, also complex activities (IADL), and Disability being participation restriction associated with health problems, basic activities and environmental factors. Restriction in the broadest sense without relation to health or restrictions in the biological system
