Welcome to the Year 8 ENGLISH PARENT WORKSHOP Mr S Simpson – DoL for English

OBJECTIVES OF THIS WORKSHOP
To answer the following questions … What is my child doing in lessons? What can I do to help my child at home? How is my child assessed? How is worked marked? Can we get extra help at school? What are the expectations in English?

In Year 8, students are expected to complete a minimum of 2 x 30 mins homework (or equivalent) every two weeks. Homework should either be preparation for the next lesson, or building / extending the learning from the previous lesson. Homework should be a reflection of: ability, pride, effort. Inadequate / incomplete homework results in a homework detention.

ASSESSMENTS AND EXAMS IN ENGLISH
Students take end of unit and end of year exams throughout KS3. These assessments / exams are to build the skills they need for KS4. In Year 11, all students take: 2 x 1 hr 45 mins exam = English Language 2 x 2 hr exam = English Literature

SUPPORT FROM SCHOOL Clubs they can attend:
Homework Club every afternoon in C2. Book Club every Tuesday in the Library.

HOW YOU CAN HELP AT HOME Websites:
BBC Bitesize = range of skills / revision. Sparknotes = detailed text information. English Faculty Website (OSA homepage). Suggested books: CGP Guides = range of books to develop skills and help with revision. ENCOURAGE READING AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!
