Plan in quality talk time with your child. How was your day
Plan in quality talk time with your child. How was your day? What did you do? What did you like best? If your child is reluctant to talk about their day then you start. Model the conversation and talk about your day, when they are ready they will begin t use your sentence structure and talk about previous experiences. Talk through play. When playing with your child it is important to stay on their theme. Act out the same narrative and then model vocabulary and sentence structure which they might not know e.g. playing with the caste- jousting, turret, moat and gatehouse. Model talking through your own thinking, events and processes e.g. when cooking talk through what you re doing and why. Your child will instinctively listen and begin to ask questions. They will pick up on the language and become more confident when speaking themselves. The more they hear you talk and engage with them, the more they will talk and engage with you and others. Speaking Children express themselves effectively, showing awareness of listeners’ needs. They use past and future forms accurately when talking about events that have happened or are to happen in the future. They develop their own narratives and explanations by connecting ideas or events. Don’t be afraid to question your child ‘Wow, how did you make that? I don't think I would be able to make that?’ this will encourage them to speak about their own ideas and help give them confidence.
