1 By the end of this Collection, I will be able to… 1
By the end of this Collection, I will be able to…   1. Deliver a speech about how people’s relationships with others shape who they are.   2. Write an essay about how the texts in this collection do or do not support the idea that people must accept others who are different from themselves.

2 Essential Question: How do we, as human beings, show that we accept people who are different than ourselves?

3 By the end of this Lesson (in a couple of days), I will be able to… 1
By the end of this Lesson (in a couple of days), I will be able to… 1. Understand that there is conflict in Israel between different ethnic groups. 2. Explain how an author’s choices concerning how to structure a text can create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise.

4 Discriminate-to note clear differences; to separate into categories Diverse-made up of elements that are different from each other Inhibit-to hold back or prevent from acting Intervene-to come between two things, persons, or events Rational-based on logic or sound reasoning

5 Poignant-emotionally moving or stimulating Wizened-shrunken or wrinkled Beleaguered-troubled with many problems Fluent-able to express oneself clearly and easily

6 “My So-Called Enemy” Page 13
Do you think that face-to-face interactions can help resolve conflicts? Read the background information on page 13, then watch the short video. You will need to remember your cinematic techniques info and argument info you learned last year. (You can find this info on the teacher website in the “Argument Essay” and “Tim Burton” folders.)

7 “My So-Called Enemy” After watching the video, write your answer for the “Collaborative Response” in a Word document. Answer the “Analyzing the Media” Questions on page 14 on the same Word document. Watch the video again, and then write a one-page argument expressing and supporting this thesis: Face-to-face interactions can/cannot help resolve conflicts because… Use evidence from the video as well as your personal experiences. This should look similar to your argument essay from last year.
