1 Math Properties

2 Math Properties Definitions:
Commutative Property (of addition and multiplication) – Is the property that states that numbers can be added or multiplied in any order without changing the answer. Examples: = • 15 • 4 = 5 • 4 • 15 Associative Property (of addition and multiplication) – Is the property that states that changing the grouping when adding or multiplying numbers won’t change the answer. Examples: ( ) + 2 = 13 + (18 + 2) (16 • 5) • 2 = 16 • (5 • 2)

3 Math Properties Definitions:
Distributive Property – Is the property that states that multiplying a number by another number is the same as multiplying a number by the parts of the other number and then adding the partial products together. Example: 11 • 14 = 11 • (10 + 4) is the same as (11 • 10) + (11 • 4). Let’s prove it: 11 • (14) (11 • 10) + (11 • 4)

4 Math Properties Identify which property is being applied in each problem below. 1.) (13 • 4) • 5 = 13 • (4 • 5) 2.) = 3.) 12 • 13 = 12(10 + 3) 4.) 2 • 12 • 6 = 2 • 6 • 12

5 Math Properties Rewrite the following problems according to the indicated property. Commutative Property 1.) = 2.) 4 • 6 • 5 = Associative Property 3.) (9 + 8) + 12 = 4.) (12 • 5) • 2 =

6 Math Properties Solve the following problems mentally by utilizing the Commutative Property to assist you. 1.) = 2.) = 3.) 4 • 14 • 5 = 4.) 2 • 16 • 5 =

7 Math Properties Solve the following problems by utilizing the Distributive Property to assist you. 1.) 8 • 13 = 2.) 7 • 32 = 3.) 9 • ) 33 • 12

8 Real-Life Application
Math Properties Real-Life Application On a baseball team, there are 8 right-handed hitters, 5 left-handed hitters and 2 switch hitters. Write two equivalent expressions using the Commutative Property that can be used to find the total number of players on the team.
