-Division of labor: Workers do one task as part of the production process. The process might not even be completed at the same site. -Modern Factories are born -America develops a “Mineral Based Economy” -Shift from water power to coal power -We are now major producers of things like iron, brass, and copper -Our industries are starting to utilize the natural resources we have very heavily

Lowell Factory System 1822 -Early Textile Mills in New England
-Recruited rural young women to work (40,000 by 1830) -Long hours, questionable conditions, good and bad reports from the workers Pros: Gave women a new sense of independence The pay was actually pretty good for the time Could assist their families financially Importance: This and many other systems like it helped set up the US as a manufacturing center. England had traditional produced manufactured goods and exported them to us, now that starts to change.

Labor Ideology 1830’s In this era, 10% of the population controls 70% Laborers begin to stick together and form the first labor unions. What do Labor Unions want? The idea of “Living as slaves to wealthy aristocracy” takes hold There are over 55 recorded strikes for higher wages in 1836 Conflicts over business owners/employers and their labor force will be a major part of the American story

A distinct middle class has emerged between the wealthy business elite and the poor laboring class Per capital income of Americans is going up in this era (2.5% annually) Add this to the newly developing manufacturing industries that have risen in America, and this creates a true middle class consumer culture Books, furniture, pianos, lithographs, and household goods are just a few examples of the manufacturing industries growing in America. We are replacing England as THE Manufacturing center

Whaling A direct result of this new consumer culture is the rise of whaling Whale oil is the lubrication and the fuel of this industrial revolution
