9 What’s the Difference Between A Career, A Job, and an Occupation?
The words career, job, and occupation are often used interchangeably. JOB is what you show up to for work CAREER spans your lifetime and includes your education, training, professional memberships, volunteering and your full history of paid work OCCUPATION describes a type of work with associated tasks, education and training, typical wages, work settings, and more. For example, you may choose to get trained for the occupation “registered nurse”. Then apply for a job as an emergency room nurse at your local hospital. After several years, your career might include that experience in the ER, as well as jobs in pediatrics, patient education, and cardiac rehabilitation.

45 How to Find and Do Work You Love

46 Career Research Project
Scenario: “The process of sourcing materials, manufacturing goods and then transporting those products to market is at the heart of supply chain. The field is expanding so rapidly that new jobs/roles are being developed every year. It is important to remember that job definitions/roles vary by industry and even by company. For example, a buyer at a manufacturing firm might perform different functions than a buyer in a retail organization. A demand planner at one company might focus on forecasting of product, while a demand planner at another might have more of a production planning function.” (Source: SupplyChain4Me) There are 7 primary functional areas of supply chain management: Purchasing, Manufacturing, Inventory Management, Demand Planning, Warehousing, Transportation, and Customer Service. You are tasked with choosing jobs/roles from 3 different functional areas and presenting your research on various aspects of said job/role in a MS Excel 2016 spreadsheet.
