The Plot The arrangement of events that tell a story.

Five Parts of Plot – Write these down in your binder/notebook (not journal)!
exposition – Sets up the situation and we are introduced to the characters.

Parts of Plot Rising action – events that build toward a high point or climax

Parts of Plot Climax – the high point of the story when it becomes clear how the conflict will turn out.

Parts of Plot Falling Action – Events that follow the climax

Parts of Plot Resolution (denouement) – The conflict is resolved and the final outcome is achieved.

Conflict A struggle between opposing forces.

Conflict Writers create conflict by allowing their characters to struggle with their problems.

Conflict External – conflict between a character and another person or non-human Internal – conflict takes place inside a character’s mind. They struggle against their personal trait. Give examples from movies: Titanic, Independence Day, Star Wars, More?

What is a symbol? A person, place, thing or event that stands for both itself and something beyond itself.
