Engineering is using science to plan and make things.
What is engineering? Engineering is using science to plan and make things.
2
Things Engineers Do Identify what the problem is.
Build a prototype (model) of something to solve the problem. Test the model in an experiment to see if it can solve the problem. Make improvements to the design and retest it. Prototype - a first, typical or preliminary model of something, especially a machine, from which other forms are developed or copied. Experiment - a scientific procedure undertaken to make a discovery, test a hypothesis, or demonstrate a known fact.

Things Engineers Do (cont.)
Electrical engineers work with electricity. Mechanical engineers build machines and mechanical systems. There are tons of other engineers out there! Other types of engineers. Civil, Aerospace, Computer, etc.

What Engineers Make Left: Space shuttle. Center: Formula 1 car. Right: Robotic arm.

The Law of Inertia Discovered by a scientist named Isaac Newton
An object that doesn’t move will probably not move. This is called inertia. A moving object will probably stay moving. Acording to Newton’s First Law of Motion Isaac Newton was a 17th century English scientist and is considered one of the most influential scientists in history. Inertia - a tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged. Speed - full, maximum, or optimum rate of motion Newton’s First Law of Motion- Everything will keep going until something stops it.
6
All matter makes friction: even air and water!
What is friction? When objects rub or bump against each other they slow down. This is called friction. All matter makes friction: even air and water! Friction - the rubbing of the surface of one body against that of another.
7
Gravity and Lift Gravity is the force that makes things stay on the ground. Lift is the force that can make things move up. Gravity - the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass.. Lift - raise to a higher position or level. Thrust - The force applied on a surface in a direction perpendicular or normal to the surface
8
Drag and Thrust Drag pushes things backwards.
Thrust pushes things to go forward.
9
Planes Planes fly by generating thrust and lift that work against drag and gravity.
10
Force, Work, and Energy Relationship
Force makes a change in an objects motion and causes it to go in a direction. When force changes an object this is called work. A force is a push or pull upon an object resulting from the object's interaction with another object. Work results when a force acts upon an object to cause a displacement (or a motion) or, in some instances, to hinder a motion.
11
Forms of Energy Kinetic energy is the energy that a moving object has.
A person running has lots of kinetic energy! Potential energy is physically stored energy. When you pull a rubber band back it holds a lot of potential energy! Kinetic energy of an object is the energy which it possesses due to its motion.
