1 Bell-ringer: 7 minutesinutes
Copy CCSS/Objective/HW A carpenter hits a nail with a hammer. Compared to the magnitude (size) of the force the hammer exerts on the nail, the magnitude (size) of the force the nail exerts on the hammer during contact is:      a. less      b. greater      c. the same HINT: See Newton’s 3rd Law

2 Mantra - Your Turn! Today is a great day for science because:
science is power. We are powerful because: We always make a difference.

3 Agenda Reflection HW Collection #2 Period 1-3: Culture Survey 2
Vectors Intro. to kinetics Distance, & displacement Practice Balloon car project Summary/ Feedback/ Questions

4 Culture Survey 2 DO NOT WRITE ON CLASS COPY
Find in worksheets in plastic sheet or keep up with reading from projection Answer honestly and keep up with reading speed!

5 Vectors A geometric object (line) that has magnitude (size or length) and direction They can be added to other vectors (tail to arrow tip) For example, we will draw forces as arrows (vectors)

6 Vectors…

7 Vectors…

8 Vectors…

9 Kinetic Motion Focus on 3 descriptions: Distance (d) Displacement (x)
Speed (s) Velocity (v) Acceleration (a)

10 Distance and Displacement
Distance (d): total space traveled Displacement (∆x): How far you have moved from the starting position A cool story about ants…

11 Link to time and speed

12 Guided and Independent Practice:
Understanding Distance and displacement with graphs and practice problems from work packet Steps to solve: Distance: Add all chunks of movement together Displacement: Final placement – Initial placement

13 Example 1: Word Problem If we were to travel from Greenwood to Cleveland, what would be our distance and estimated displacement? Greenwood, MS Head south on Main St toward E Henry St for 0.8 mi Turn right to merge onto US-49E N/US-82 W, travel 4.5 mi Turn right onto US-49E N. Travel 15.5 mi Turn left onto MS-8 W. Travel23.9 mi Turn left onto Cotton Row. Travel 0.2 mi Turn right onto S Court St. Travel 0.1 mi Cleveland, MS

14 Example 2: Graphing distance vs. time!
Miss K leaves the house and goes 2 miles in 4.5 minutes She gets stuck in standstill traffic for 1.5 minutes She forgets something and turns around. Takes 2 minutes to get back to the house. She stays for 2 minutes in the house looking for lost item. She heads back out on road, travels 4 miles in 8 minutes

15 Using slope for speed/velocity

16 Solving a graph problem:

17 Example 3: Your turn! Times at rest: Times moving forward:
Final displacement:

18 Balloon-Powered Car Challenge!
Create a balloon (air) powered race car for maximum speed and distance, and to demonstrate Newton’s Laws of motion. We will test and race them, measure distance, speed, velocity, and acceleration for PRIZES! You can build the cars out of any material, such as tissue roll, match box, spaghetti box, paper etc. More details on handout!

19 Questions to think/write about...
Create and describe a plan to test changes in distance by using a balloon-powered car Basketball Team Challenge: How could you calculate your total displacement running during a basketball game?

20 Last Items/ Questions Homework: Car plans and 1 distance  problem from packet Think about your progress and effort in Units 1 & 2 for Reflection/Celebration once grades are back
