Usually inherited
Ex: England under Henry VIII

3. Dictatorship power resides in one
control every aspect of people's life, usually with brute force
Example:
Adolf Hitler of Nazi Germany
Fidel Castro of Cuba

4. Oligarchy a small group has the power to govern
Usually a privileged few- wealthy
Ex: South Africa with apartheid

Democracy

6. Republic Representative government under laws (the Constitution).
Recognizes the rights of individuals
power lies in citizens who vote for officers that in turn are responsible to voters

Ex: Former Soviet Union

8. Theocracy
rule by a religious elite
Ex: The Pope and Vatican City
