1 PARENTING STYLES

2 Parenting Differences
Moms and Dads parent differently How to negotiate parenting when each reacts differently to situations? Let’s look at some tips….

3 Bridging a significant difference in parenting styles is one of the most difficult aspects of building a family Each parent brings into the equation their past, childhood experiences, how they were raised, along with their beliefs & values about child rearing, discipline, and tradition.

4 Communication Take time to discuss each other’s parenting styles and values. Work on listening to your partner as carefully as you would like them to listen to you Be AWARE if your own childhood is influencing how you react to your child or your co-parent Assess if this reaction is fit for today’s situation

5 Other Tips: Don’t play the blame game. Examine your own actions and see what role you played in the conflict Understand each other’s need for control. Try to be flexible and to not always have to be in control Never undermine your partner or their parenting in front of children. Talk about it in private

6 Resolution – bring issues to closure
don’t put off dealing with important conflicts – resolve them promptly you both want what’s best for the children, despite your differences when conflict arises, try to relax, be compassionate, and know your kids need you both
