1 WESTERN REGIONAL WORKSHOP
FOR ECBC IMPLEMENTATION, PUNE 18TH MAY, 2018 ENERGY CONSERVATION BUILDING CODE

2 About Energy Conservation Building Code
The Energy Conservation Act, was enacted in 2001 Purpose: Provide legal framework and institutional arrangement to embark energy efficiency drive. This includes Energy Conservation Building Code Section 15 of the Act empowers Govt. of India and State Governments to modify ECBC as per climatic conditions of states. Voluntary introduction of ECBC in May 2007, second version launched in June 2017

3 Scope of the code Applicable to New Commercial buildings (Inclusive Govt. Buildings) having connected load of 100 kW or greater or a contract demand of 120 kVA or greater. Currently is under voluntary stage Mandatory notification in progress in different States While the ECBC has been developed by BEE, its enforcement lies with the State governments and urban local bodies through notification within their states as per their regional requirements

4 Salient features of ECBC 2017
Technology Neutral Renewable Energy Integration Incremental energy performance levels Applicability to various categories of buildings and Passive Design Strategies. Additional improvements in higher grades ECBC plus: 35% or higher Super ECBC: 50% or higher

5 Impact of ECBC 2017

6 Applicability on Building Components
BUILDING ENVELOPE LIGHTING COMFORT SYSTEM & CONTROLS SERVICE WATER HEATING RENEWABLE ENERGY ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS Source: TERI, Roadmap to energy efficient buildings

7 ECBC 2017: An Integrated Process
EFFICIENT BUILDING BUILDING DEMAND REDUCTION EFFICIENT BUILDING SYSTEMS OFFSET THROUGH RENEWABLES BUILDING OPERATIONS AND CONTROLS Insulation of roof & walls Shading windows Glass selection (SHGC, u-value, VLT) Effective daylight in the building REDUCED ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING REQUIREMENT (due to daylight enhancement) Low lighting power density of the lighting system CONTROLS: daylight, occupancy, motion controls, astronomical controls for exterior System sizing reduced compared to conventional Efficient systems System controls System balancing Efficient equipment, motors Power factor correction Transformers, dg sets Distribution system Offset electricity use for hot water requirement of building Offset electricity form grid by power generation through renewable ENVELOPE LIGHTING HVAC ELECTRICAL SERVICE WATER HEATING & RENEWABLE

8 K.K. Guest House, Bangalore
KEY BENEFITS: Sizing of HVAC system was reduced Capacity of DG backup was reduced Transformer sizing reduced from two KVA units to to 630 KVA Electrical system planned efficiently and hence cost effective. Useful daylight in spaces reduced dependence on artificial light during the day. BUILDING TYPE HOTEL CLIMATE Moderate AREA 19,875 m2 Initial Construction Cost 800 Million INCREMENTAL COST 16 Million ANNUAL ENERGY SAVING 700 Thousand Units % Energy Saving compared to as it is case 48.6% % Energy Saving compared to ECBC Baseline 20.1% PAYBACK PERIOD 2.4 Years PROJECT STATUS Nearing Completion KEY ENERGY EFFICIENCY INTERVENTIONS: Optimized orientation and massing Shading from direct solar radiation High performing facade Reduced heat gain through building envelope Ample daylight in the building Efficient HVAC systems (VRF air cooled system) Efficient indoor and outdoor lighting Controls for lighting and HVAC systems Efficient electrical systems as per ECBC requirement
