1 Classification EQ: How can I use a classification key to figure out unknown organisms?

2 What is CLASSIFICATION?
Classification- organizing living things based on their similarities in structures, form and functions. Scientists classify living and extinct organisms to make them easier to study for diseases, similar characteristics, and discovery of new species.

3 8 Levels of Classification founded by Carolous Linnaeus
DOMAIN KINGDOM PHYLUM CLASS ORDER FAMILY GENUS SPECIES Did King Philip Come Over For Good Spaghetti

4 . Each level is included in the level above it.
Levels get increasingly specific from kingdom to species.

7 Taxonomy Taxonomy- the science of classifying organisms.
** Scientists use Branching Diagrams and Dichotomous Key to classify organisms.

8 A branching diagram can show the relationships between organisms.
Organisms that are more closely related are closer together on the diagram.

9 Which animal is most similar to the chimp?
Which has claws or nails? Which animal has feathers?

10 Classification based on common ancestry
species placed in order that they descended from common ancestor

11 Scientific Names When living things are classified, they get a scientific name. Scientific names are usually Latin or Greek. The scientific name is the same everywhere in the world (to communicate about the same species).

12 *The scientific name is always the genus and species name together.
Asian Elephant Scientific Name: Elephas maximus *The scientific name is always the genus and species name together.

13 Two-Part Scientific Names
The genus is always written first and is always capitalized. Ex: Elephas The species name is second and is always lower case. Ex: maximus The scientific name (the entire name) is always italicized or underlined. Elephas maximus = Asian Elephants

17 DICHOTOMOUS KEY Scientists use a DICHOTOMOUS KEY to identify unknown organisms based on descriptions and answers to questions.

18 What steps would you use to identify a peach?
Taxonomic Key 1a Fruits occur singly Go to 3 1b Fruits occur in clusters of two or more Go to 2 2a Fruits are round Grapes 2b Fruits are elongate Bananas 3a Thick skin that separates easily from flesh Oranges 3b Thin skin that adheres to flesh Go to 4 4a More than one seed per fruit Apples 4b One seed per fruit Go to 5 5a Skin covered with velvety hairs Peaches 5b Skin smooth, without hairs Plums What steps would you use to identify a peach?

20 Discussion QUIZ How should a scientific name always be written?
2. What are the 8 levels of classification?

21 3. Which plant is least similar to the hibiscus?
4. Which plant has tissues that transport materials? 5. Which plant has seeds?

22 6. Bird W 7. Bird X 8. Bird Y 9. Bird Z

23 Your diagram must be colored!!!
Your task: Create your own branching diagram with at least 5 animals. Write 5 questions that can be answered using your branching diagram. OR 2. Create your own dichotomous key using the worksheet given. Your diagram must be colored!!!
