Female Canadians Why Might it Matter to People Today that Female Canadians Were/Weren’t Equal to Males? By: Sajenie S
2
Introduction This presentation's purpose is to show you how Female Canadians weren’t and aren’t treated equally. To show you why it matters, and what we can do, right now to make sure it’s right.
3
Voting Rights Female Canadians in the past did not get the same voting rights as males. This is because they were thought to be: Too emotional If married, vote goes to spouse Voting distracts from household If interested in politics, gets too busy Can’t make decisions Clueless about politics Should only care for family; household Voting polls are not fit for women Loses respect for males Turn them unladylike Families would suffer without caretaker Talking unnecessarily about politics Not responsible to vote properly
4
Politics Female Canadians in the present are not as involved in politics as they should be. Here are some reasons why they are thought to: 25% are women Canadian parliament Lack of sponsors, funding Not enough support ‘Busy’ with household Not ‘used to’ abundant work Too ‘delicate’ to engage politics Need to have enough money Need to face discrimination Females not paid equally Aren’t always interested in politics Don’t take many risks Are unsure about future choices Also have family responsibilities
5
Map of Females in Parliament Worldwide This is a world map, and partially a population map, the map’s purpose is to show that amount of women involved in politics, (the parliament). The circles represents women in politics, the bigger the circle, more females in parliament in that area. The purpose of this map is to inform others about the amount of females involved in Parliament in different places across the world. A trend in the map is that more females are involved in politics in Europe and North America. These are more developed places. I think that there are more females in parliament in developed places, because things such as human rights would be stronger there, and one of the human rights is that everyone has is: the right to work.
6
Education Part 1 Female Canadians in the past didn’t get a proper education, or the education that they deserved because of many things, such as: Gender stereotypes Costs- lack of funding Distance- school too far Discrimination, violence Poor sanitation, (not clean water) Have Disabilities Poverty War, terrorism, other conflicts Natural disasters Have to work for money Way to school is dangerous Not enough female teachers
7
Education Part 2 Female Canadians in the past, if they were lucky they could get an education. But their experienced may not have felt the same as one from a Male, this is because: Females didn’t get enough attention Expected to better- socially Were partially ignored in academic Males asked to participate more Males given more leadership opportunities Females don’t get enough praise No criticism, (females)- can’t learn Females not recognized enough Females better- language arts Females- not always happy experience Females- not very encouraged
8
Jobs Female Canadians didn’t do certain jobs, or did certain jobs because of stereotypes, and assumptions: Good at caregiving jobs Good at business jobs Good at services for others Good at empathetic jobs Good at leadership, guiding others Jobs that require knowledge Jobs that promote good health Jobs for other’s health and safety Not jobs that risk safety Not jobs- require athletic ability Not rough jobs Not jobs that require precision
9
Freedom Female Canadians also didn’t get the chance to have as much freedom in their life for certain reasons: Caretaker Family Not paid equally Do more housework than males Aren’t treated equally to males Aren’t ‘strong’ enough Aren’t as ‘good’ in academics Aren’t as ‘good’ in athletics Are ‘unstable’, can’t handle much Weaker than males ‘Can’t’ be independent Expected to be social ‘Clueless’ about jobs
10
Answer? The question is: Why might it matter to people today that females were/weren’t equal to males in Canada? (past) I think that the equality between females and males in Canada does matter, I think this because Females can do anything that males can do, and people shouldn’t treat Female Canadians differently, just because they are Female, they can still do anything. This would matter to people because people today should know that everyone should be equal to each other to maintain a peaceful world. The way Female Canadians were treated before is not acceptable. There is so much that can be done, but I want to make sure that the human rights are followed to make sure that Female Canadians get treated equally. The only thing that can be done is to treat Female Canadians equally from now on, and apologize for the rough past, and discrimination.
11
Conclusion Thank you for looking at my presentation… I hope that after watching this presentation, you’ve learned a little bit more about how the past could be unfair and stereotypical to Female Canadians, and why it really matters to know.
