2. The Role of the Textbook
The Textbook is a framework for curriculum
The Textbook has a fixed collection of resources
The Textbook provides:
A ‘cultural’ context with some content
The vocabulary topic in the lesson
Structures used in typical scenes of daily life pertaining to the topic
For any given topic provided by the textbook, there are implicit Understandings.
The next step is to develop the Understandings using Authentic Resources, thereby increasing meaningful learning and student engagement

3. What are Authentic Resources?
Authentic Resources are made in the target language for speakers of that language: FUBU
Authentic Resources make students active participants in the culture, rather than outsiders looking in.
Authentic Resources prepare students for authentic experiences. They keep instruction in the Target Language.
Authentic Resources engage students and encourage critical thinking.

Authentic Resources provide:
Informational Text
Embedded Cultural Context
Comprehensive Input
Required by LAFS and WL NGSS Standards
Instructional Shifts for 21st Century Standards:
Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction (Authentic Informational Text)
Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational
Regular engagement with complex text and its academic language.

The World Languages Standards scaffold language acquisition, and require culturally authentic texts and language.

Pinterest is a tool for finding and organizing authentic resources.
Pinterest is a sophisticated and visually organized method of storing information from the Internet used by world language teachers around the globe.
Pinterest houses a reliable collection of World Language resources including photographs, infographs, videos, commercials, graphic organizers, lessons, television, radio, art, news, and anything you can think of to post!
