4. Monastic and Mendicant Orders
After the Fall of Rome, many people looked to the church for leadership.
Monasteries grew in number as more and more people became monks.
Most people in Europe could not read. Books found in monasteries or with the wealthy.
The Monastic Order (monks in a monastery):
Copy and study books (usually religious texts, or Latin or Greek texts from ancient Greece or Rome)
Teach local children
Work in hospital
Work in fields
Mendicant Orders (also known as friars)
They lived in the public; often traveling around teaching about Christianity.
They tried to live as Jesus did. They owned very little property.

For this class period, we are pretending to be inside a monastery. My name will be “Abbot Deal.”
We will follow a strict schedule at this monastery.
As you follow the schedule, each of you will have tasks to complete. You will earn points for your team for each task you complete.

Many people in Europe chose to spend their life as a monk and live inside a monastery.
Their life was spent in service to God through prayer, worship, and work.
Jobs ranged from working in farms, caring for sick, or teaching local children.

To simulate the balance of work and prayer in monastic life, we will follow a strict schedule.
3 minutes to work
1 minutes to pray (to simulate “prayer time” we will sit silently for 1 minute)
Talking at inappropriate times will result in loss of points for your team.
The winning team will have the highest average of points per person.
