Writing an Objective Summary in Social Studies
Tips: Begin with a topic sentence that includes a summary of the time period or topic: The Civil Rights Movement was……..Achieving equal rights was not an easy task! Use your notes or reading to write the body of the paragraph: Choose the 5 most important facts that you found. Use transitional phrases and time order words to make connections between your sentences: Examples: As a result, Furthermore, This had many effects such as… As years passed…… Later in the decade of the 1960’s… End with a concluding sentence that sums up the main idea of the paragraph: In conclusion, it is evident that the Civil Rights Movement was a very exciting time in the United States. (2nd example ) In conclusion, it is evident that African American used a variety of methods to obtain equal rights in American society.

Objective Summary Example- Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s (Transitional words and phrases are highlighted) There were many changes that occurred during the decade of the 1960’s During the 1960’s many groups including African Americans, Latinos and women began to question the ways in which they were being treated. . As a result of this, The Civil Rights Movement began: People began to work together in order to create positive change and effects. For example, Blacks began to publicly demonstrate and publicly protest against segregation by staging sit-ins. In addition, another part of the Civil Rights Movement involved Latinos. During the 1960’s, Mexican farm workers who had recently immigrated to America received harsh and unfair treatment on the job as they picked fruits. As a result, Mexican workers called for people to boycott grapes in the hope that the fruit company would lose money and meet their demands for fair wages and treatment. Therefore it is evident that the 1960’s was a very exciting time period that involved many changes.
