As we have seen through the Early Middle Ages, and on into the High Middle Ages, the times were full of Violence
The Feudal System provided some assistance in the protection of the manor (knights etc.), but this was not a 100% guarantee
This is where the castle came into play
Home for the Lords, & Fortification against enemy attack

2. The Castle: Location
Castles made use of their natural surrounding to make them more formidable
They were often built on high ground, rocky ledges or a bend in the river

3. Castles: An Evolution With time, Castles evolved in their design
Higher walls were implemented into their design
They were also “sloped” to lessen the impact of catapults
Moats and Drawbridges were used to keep attackers from the walls
They were mainly tools in a effort to “buy time” for the defenders as they awaited reinforcements from attacks
