1 Do Now- at your seat: (10/28) Question, Answer, Evidence YOU WILL NEED A CALCULATOR TODAY.
2. Based on the information given, how many of the stars listed in Table 1 have at least one planet with a circular orbit? a. 0 b. 1 c. 2 d. 3

2 Do Now Answer:

3 Bone Detectives Lab By the end of class today, you will have finished all of your data collection. Before we finish data collection, we are going to practice how to estimate height from the length of a long bone.

4 110 Sex Determination 35mm 127 Not every characteristic of your skeleton will be aligned to one gender Circle the average characteristic that your results match for the Male/Female data on pages 1-2 circular Sharp square Not expressed beyond bumpy absent slanting rounded slanting

5 Race Determination Complete the same process you used for gender determination to identify the race of your skeleton

6 Sex & Race Determination Evidence
At the end of each subheading, you will see a line for your FINAL DETERMINATION You must CITE EVIDENCE from your data that supports your findings. This will be critical when you write your case report.

7 Height Determination After you have determined the gender and race of your skeleton, you will choose ONE regression formula from each table to complete If you think your skeleton is a female Caucasian, you will choose that formula

8 Height Determination Note that the formulas use the maximum length of the long bones. For maximum length of the femur and humerus, you already recorded this in the table for those bones on page 2. For tibia, you will need to use the large calipers to determine the maximum length.

9 Height Determination Practice
Take out a piece of paper – label it Height Estimation Practice Example: Caucasian female MLF= 404mm Formula (from Table 7) 2.47 (MLF) /+ 3.72 This means I have to do 2 equations One with a subtraction here and one with an addition here!

10 Height Determination Identify the formula you will use by finding the bone first, then looking at the gender and race. Make sure the maximum length of the bone is in centimeters Write out the formula twice, first with the subtraction sign, then the addition sign Substitute the Maximum Length of the bone and solve

11 Height Determination To convert from cm to inches, you will divide your answer by 2.54. To convert your answer from inches to feet, you will divide your new answer by 12. This will give you a number and decimal point. The whole number is your answer in feet. The decimal needs to be multiplied by 12 to get the number of inches.

12 Height Determination Example #2: Asian Male
Formula? (listed in your packet) Maximum length of tibia: 390cm

13 Height Determination Example #3: African Male
Formula? (listed in your packet) Maximum length of humerus: 336 cm

14 Bone Detectives Lab – Day 2 tasks
Complete any data collection Page 3, use Figures and a ruler. Nasal height is NOT an inside measurement! Read instructions under SKULL – Race Determination #2 Nasal index is a ratio. It does not have units. Use your findings to explain your FINAL DETERMINATION of each category. Complete your height estimation with the gender and race from your final determination
