Topic 1B The Rise of the Superpowers Date: How did the Cold War Begin Objective Understand what the Cold War was and why it was more frightening than WW2. Remind Class they have a test this week. Warm-up – answer this question into your exercise copy. Five countries in the world today have so much influence that they are considered ‘Superpowers’ or ‘Great Powers’. Can you name the countries and what you believe it means to be a ‘Superpower’. (Note: it is not just strength)

Potential Superpowers The European Union, Japan, Canada, Germany, South Africa and Brazil – based on economy, education, and military might.

3 Notes Superpowers: the term used to describe the USA and the Soviet Union after World War II – the two most powerful countries in the world at that time. Cold War: the tensions that existed between America and the Soviet Union after WW2. It is called a Cold War because it never developed into an open war between both superpowers. 4 Notes Iron Curtain: a term used to describe the division line between the Western European democracies and the Eastern European communist countries. Joseph Stalin, a Russian communist dictator, wished for friendly (communist) governments as neighbours. The Allies wanted democratic governments with a capitalist economic system and feared that Stalin was like Hitler. Reading pages 71 – 75 – answering Q. 1-8 EXERCISE COPY.

5 Notes In response to the rise of Communism (free houses, healthcare and education) U.S. President Truman in 1947 enacted the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan. Truman Doctrine: a promise that America would help any Democratic Government fighting a communist takeover. The Marshall Plan: 13.5 Billion Dollars of aid to European countries, provided they had a capitalist economic system. Reading pages 71 – 75 – answering Q. 1-8 EXERCISE COPY.
