Over the next several days you will read and study several of the Greek myths that are alluded to in The Lightning Thief.
Rick Riordan made many allusions to Greek myths in The Lightning Thief and knowing more about these allusions will help you understand Percy and his journey more deeply.
Think of an allusion as one story “playing beside” another.
Read along silently as Myths and Legends is read aloud.
What do you think these words mean: deceit, immortal, divinities, solemnity? Use context clues.
Use the Word Catcher on p. 49 to record new words you learn.

8. Close Read: Annotating the Text
Re-read the text independently and make annotations about the main idea of each paragraph.
Write the main idea of each paragraph in the space provided on page 50 “Myths and Legends”: Using Text Details to Determine the Main Idea.
For example (P1):
“In appearance, the gods were supposed to resemble mortals, but they were more beautiful, strong, and tall. They resembled human beings in their feelings and habits, marrying one another and having children, and needing daily nourishment and refreshing sleep.”
The gods looked and acted like people but were bigger and stronger.
