Development of Photovoltaic Concentrator for Solar Power
Solar technology has advanced over the years; furthermore, there is still improvement to be accomplished. The major concern with solar energy is the gross inefficient absorption of the photovoltaic cells. There are many methods of collecting solar energy; moreover, solar concentration is an innovative alternative to increase the efficiency of solar absorption. This research focuses on the design and testing of a solar concentrator with the purpose of increasing the solar energy density absorbed by the photovoltaic cell. Consequently, the photovoltaic cell can operate at a higher efficiency and create more amperage and electrical output. The apparatus consisted of eight square foot mirrors that were angled to reflect and concentrate solar light to a focal point three feet above them. The results revealed a linear relationship between energy focused and electrical output. This research will result in the use of solar concentration as an efficient method of absorbing solar energy. 5
Innovation Increase reflected surface area from 1ft2 to 8ft2
6
Measuring The photovoltaic cell was placed in the focal area of the apparatus where the maximum voltage and amperage was measured The cell’s performance was improved by cooling the cell to ambient temperature before each testing
7
Outcome The results revealed a linear relationship between the area of energy focused and electrical output (Amperage) Max Amperage for Cooling Photovoltaic Cell = Amps 11.5% Increase in Amperage from 1 to 8 mirrors
8
Outcome Cont. Relationship between area of energy focused and electrical output (Voltage) Max Voltage for Cooling Cell =0.616 V 5.84% Voltage increase from 1 to 8 mirrors
9
Accomplishment Led to development of a Parabolic Solar Concentrator
This research will result in the use of solar concentration as an efficient method of absorbing solar energy.
