1 Vocabulary Intro

2 knot A knot is made by passing one end of a string or rope through a loop and pulling it tight. The boy showed how a strong knot in a rope can hold things together. Why is it a good idea to tie your shoelaces into a tight knot?

3 copy To copy means to do or make something exactly like another thing.
You can copy the outline of your hand by tracing over it onto a chalkboard. When did you copy what someone did so that you could learn how to do something?

4 planning If you are planning something, you are deciding what you want to do before you actually do it. They are planning to fly their kite at the park today. Why is it important to do enough planning before you begin to do something?

5 lonely A person who is lonely feels sad to be alone.
She missed her friend who moved to another town. She is lonely. When have you been lonely?

6 heavily If something moves heavily, it moves as if it weighs a lot.
It was raining heavily. The umbrella kept them from getting soaking wet. If something fell onto the floor heavily, how would it sound?

7 seriously When you act or speak seriously, you are sincere and not joking. The boy takes playing chess seriously. He does not laugh or joke around. When have you spoken seriously about something?

8 answered If you answered someone, it means you replied to a question.
When the phone rang, she answered it and said hello. What is the last question you answered?

9 guessed If you guessed about something, you formed an idea without knowing all the facts. The boy hid his eyes. He guessed that his friend was hiding behind a big tree. When have you guessed correctly about something?
