“At Least 26 Dead After Gunman Opens Fire In South Texas Church”
2
A gunman dressed in black tactical-style gear and armed with an assault rifle opened fire inside the Sutherland Springs First Baptist Church on Sunday, killing 26 people in an attack that claimed tight-knit neighbors and multiple family members ranging in age from 5 to 72 years old. Once the shooting started Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, there was likely "no way" for congregants to escape, said the County Sheriff. Officials said about 20 others were wounded. The shooter has been identified as Devin Patrick Kelley, 26. As the shooter left the church, he was confronted by an armed resident who "grabbed his rifle and engaged the suspect." A short time later, the suspect was found dead in his vehicle at the county line. Several weapons were found inside the vehicle but it was unclear if the attacker died of a self-inflicted wound or if he was shot by the resident who confronted him. U.S. officials said Kelley didn't appear to be linked to organized terrorist groups. Investigators were looking at social media posts Kelley made in the days before the attack, including one that appeared to show an AR-15 semiautomatic weapon, but at this time investigators weren't ready to discuss a possible motive.

In Other News It's been a long time running -- four decades to be exact -- since an American woman broke the finish line tape at the New York City Marathon, but Olympic medalist Shalane Flanagan did just that on Sunday. With an unofficial time of 2 hours, 26 minutes and 53 seconds, the 36-year-old Flanagan beat three-time defending champion Mary Keitany of Kenya by a minute and one second. Times won't be official until later this month. Republican Sen. Rand Paul has five rib fractures, including three displaced fractures and lung contusions, after an assault in his home in Bowling Green, Kentucky, a senior adviser told CNN. Paul sustained what were initially reported as "minor injuries" after a neighbor allegedly assaulted him in his home Friday. Kentucky State Troopers said the neighbor, Rene Albert Boucher, "intentionally assaulted" the senator. The motive for the alleged assault is unknown, but assaulting a member of Congress is a federal crime and could likely result in severe charges including felony assault or assault of a member. Both Capitol Police and the FBI are investigating the incident.
