DAV Properties are name, value pairs Name: a URI (can be a URL) Value: a sequence of well-formed XML Advantage: can define new properties without central registration, and without fear of namespace collisions But, sometimes you want to register properties that will be widely used.

Information that needs to be provided for each property: property name property semantics live or dead property (& behavior if live) property syntax DTD fragment for contents BNF for internal syntax of elements (if applicable) security considerations contact information for the property maintainer

3 Where to put registry? Some suggestions have been made on the list:
Web site (non-IANA): Pro: easy to set up, submit properties, find properties Con: lack of institutional commitment to registry IANA Pro: long term institutional commitment Con: more heavy-weight, harder to set up
