Science Vocab 2 Week 1-2

Phases The different appearances of the moon caused by its reflecting varying amounts of the sun.

Lunar eclipse When the earth passes directly between the sun and the moon briefly blocking out the moon.

Solar eclipse the moon comes directly between the sun and earth, this blocks out the sun's light for a brief time.

tide The periodic rise and fall of the sea level under the gravitational pull of the moon.

cycle A complete round or a series of events that are repeated in the same order.

revolution One complete circular movement made by one object around another object.

Leap year A period of 366 days that happens once every four years.

waxing It is the phase in which we can see an increasing part of the moon's lighted side.

waning describes phases that occur after a full moon, as the visible lighted side of the Moon grows smaller.

gibbous More than half but less than fully illuminated. Used of the moon or a planet

orbit The curved path in which a planet, satellite, or spacecraft revolves around another body.

solstice Either of the two times of the year when the sun is at its greatest distance from the celestial equator.

equinox Either of two times of the year when the sun crosses the plane of the earth's equator and day and night are of equal length.

rotation The act of turning on, or around, an axis. On Earth, this is equal to 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds.

latitude distance on the Earth's surface as measured by degrees north or south from the equator, imaginary lines that go in the same direction as the equator.

longitude The distance in degrees east or west of the prime meridian, imaginary lines that run top to bottom on a map

gravitational pull the force objects exert on other objects , the pull between the earth, moon, and sun.

axis An imaginary line through the middle of a body or planet, through which that object spins.

tilt an astronomical term regarding the angle of a planet's rotation axis in relation to its orbital plane.
