1 Policy 7.11 Acceptance of C- Grades

2 History This policy was revised and approved by AGC on April 23, 2013.
(Only minor changes were incorporated, none that changed the intent of the Policy.) Subsequently, on November 12, 2013 AGC approved a new Transfer Policy.

3 The Tale of Two Policies
Acceptance of C- Policy Transfer Policy GRCC will continue its current practice of accepting grades of C- from transfer institutions. Transfer credit is awarded for: Courses from appropriately recognized institutions Courses with grades of “C” or higher (Transfer Policy only) 100 – 300 Level courses

4 Our Practice “When prerequisites are determined for progression within a degree, a grade of C- or higher must be earned.” Practice: Only “hard” pre-reqs are enforced. This is not in practice throughout the institution.

5 Our Practice “Only those departments that offer subject specific pre-requisites, as noted in the current catalog, may continue to use a grade of C or some other earned grade/score to determine progression in a degree program or discipline. These departments will continue to accept C- grades from transfer institutions.” Practice: Many departments have instituted course pre-reqs that require prior knowledge to be successful.

6 Recommendation Eliminate Policy 7.11: Acceptance of C- Grades
The Transfer Policy contradicts it and adheres to HLC requirements. To fulfill the MTA, students must complete a total of 30 credits in English Composition, Humanities, Social Science, and Natural Science & Mathematics in the approved courses below. Students must receive a 2.0 (grade of C) in each course in order to be awarded the MTA. GRCC current practice is not enforcing the pre-req portion of the policy. Departments can have the autonomy to determine their own pre-req course sequence requirements.
