Workshop Outcomes By the end of this workshop, delegates should be able to: recognise analysis as a systematic process and identify the steps involved identify the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of skilled coaching performance construct a checklist of coaching behaviours that reflect skilled performance in their current coaching situation and then use it to analyse their coaching identify some of the methods and tools used to carry out observation and analysis and select possible strategies and actions for improvement

To analyse means to… Take a close detailed look at something, breaking it down into its constituent parts in order to: describe it compare it with what is wanted explain it explore the solutions

The Reflective Cycle Experience Experience Description
Describe the experience Evaluation/Analysis Explain what was good/bad and why, and compare against the desired performance Action Plan What will you do next time? Conclusion Explore your options in addressing this

Task Working in small groups, pairs or individually:
list the knowledge, skills, experience, personal qualities and behaviours of a skilled coach

The ‘What’ of Skilled Coaching
Skilled coaches know what to coach to be effective/successful in the situation they are in They have knowledge about: technical skills tactical skills physiology and physical/fitness training psychology and mental training athlete development learning and the coaching process

The ‘How’ of Skilled Coaching
Skilled coaches know how to coach to be effective/successful in the situation they are in They have skills and experience in: providing instruction and explanation providing demonstration observation and analysis providing feedback They have the personal qualities needed to manage themselves and their relationships successfully

Tools for Analysing Your Coaching
External Checklist Feedback from performers Feedback from other coaches Mentoring Internal Checklist/tick list Video Reflective diary

Coach Behaviour May be Affected by:
Performers’ stated goals Coaching goals, philosophies and expectations Aims of specific sessions Specific situation/context The coaching environment Performers’/coaches’ emotional/physical state Performers’ stage of development

Task Using the checklist prompt sheet provided, devise your own checklist to aid your observation and analysis

Coaching Task 1 In pairs, either:
one person coach your partner to perform an effective jumping action from the sheet provided or coach another pair Swap roles Each delegate should record their observations before feeding back to the group

Coaching Task 2 In groups of 4–8, one delegate is to conduct a session of approximately 5–6 minutes with a group of participants Each delegate should record their observations using the prompt sheet Delegates to feed back their observations to the group Repeat the process with other delegates

Self-analysis and Reflection
Recap of Analysis Process: Describe it – what, how, when, where etc Compare it with what is wanted – against your desired outcome Explain it – reasons to justify why the situation is as it is Explore the solutions – devise strategies and implement actions to improve and be the best you can

Where Can I Get Help? Would I Move Closer to My Goal if:
I had more knowledge? I had more experience? I had new skills? My actions matched my beliefs more closely? Consider tracking down books, articles, DVDs, workshops from your governing body of sport or sports coach UK Look for a coach who seems to be effective and ask if they will observe/ mentor you Find a workshop which may help Practise and be prepared to try new things If you want to understand better why you do what you do, you may wish to engage in self-reflection and ask yourself more questions
