2 Classification Rhodophyta is red algae.
It is classified by it’s color (red). There are approximately 6000 species of Rhodophyta. An example is Palmaria palmate. This is commonly eaten throughout the world.

3 Life cycle Male gametophyte fertilizes female egg.
Forms carpogonium which grows on the female. Spores are developed and are dispersed. Tetrasporophyte is formed. Tetrasporophyte releases tetraspores. Tertraspores are either male or female. Cycle repeats.

4 Structure Most are multicellular. Distinctive red color. Plant-like.
Lack flagella

5 Habitat Most Red Algae is found in the ocean.
Few are found in fresh water. Grow attached to rocks or other algae. Commonly found in coral reefs or tidal pools.

6 Feeding habits Rhodophyta are producers.
Get energy through photosynthesis.

7 Reproduction Red algae can reproduce asexually and sexually.
They often produce spores.
