2 Paul Revere ( ) Paul Revere lived in Massachusetts, one of the 13 colonies. Find Massachusetts on a map. Paul Revere lived in the city of Boston. Find Boston on the map.

3 Paul Revere was a Patriot.
Who was Paul Revere? Paul Revere was a Patriot. A PATRIOT was a colonist who wanted freedom from the British.

4 A colony belongs to another country.
Colonists are people who live in a colony. At one time, the United States of America was a colony of Great Britain.

5 What did Paul Revere do to help the American colonies to become the United States of America?
The British wanted to keep control of Massachusetts and the other colonies. The British sent soldiers to make sure the colonists did not rebel (fight back).

6 Colonists joined militias to prepare for war with Great Britain.
A militia is a group of citizens who train for battle.

7 What are some obstacles Paul Revere had to overcome living under British rule?  
He had to be careful delivering mail because it contained plans to protest British rule. British government would not allow the colonists to choose people to vote on taxes. British soldiers wanted to destroy patriots’ supplies and capture their leaders.

8 How was Paul Revere brave?
It was dangerous to be a Patriot or in the militia. Paul did it anyway. He wanted freedom. FREEDOM

9 What did Paul do? Paul found out the British were coming to destroy the Patriots’ weapons. He rode a horse to warn the militia.

10 He shouted throughout the town “The British are coming”.
When the British came, shots were fired and the Revolutionary War began.

11 In the end, the Patriots won the war and won their freedom.
The colonies became the United States of America. Paul Revere and the Patriots freed the colonies.

12 Where did Paul live? Paul lived in Boston, Massachusetts which was a center of Patriot activity. Boston is surrounded by water so he had to choose his route well. Paul rowed across the Charles River where he borrowed a horse.

13 He rode to Lexington and all along the way he warned that the British were coming.
After the Revolutionary War, Paul stayed in Boston.

14 He worked as a silversmith.
He made things from silver, brass, and other metals.

15 A Question for You What might have been different for Paul Revere if he hadn’t lived in Boston, where the British army was stationed, but instead lived in the South?
