Present Progressive!!!

Why is it used? Used to talk about what is happening right now. Many times it is used in Spanish when in English we would use –ing.

How is it formed? ESTAR + Present Participle Estoy Estamos Present Estás Estáis + Participle Está Están

What is a Present Participle? This is formed using a VERB This is the -ing verb. I am eating. You are swimming. We are singing.

How is the Present Participle formed in Spanish? AR verbs 1)Take off –ar 2) add ando ER/IR verbs 1) Take off –er/ -ir 2) add iendo

Forming the Present Participle… Hablar 1) Take off –ar habl 2) Add ando hablando Comer 1) Take off –ercom 2) Add iendocomiendo

Exceptions! If the stem ends in a vowel: -iendo changes to –yendo (leer) If the verb is a stem-changing: O – UE changes to O-U (dormir) E - IE changes to E-I (sentir) E-I stays E-I (decir) Poder y Ir Pudiendo yendo

Now put it together! Forming the Present Progressive: 1) Conjugate ESTAR according to your subject. 2) Add the Present Participle *this does not change depending on subject!

How would we say The man is listening? Él está escuchando.

Number your paper 1-9 With the subject given, use the picture to use the present progressive to tell what is happening. Then write the sentence in English.

REMEMBER! When using the Present Progressive: You MUST have a form of the verb ESTAR and You MUST have a present participle (-ando, iendo)
