Latitude Latitude is the distance in degrees north or south of the equator The equator is number 0 degrees and the poles are 90 degrees Locations north of the equator are labeled degrees north latitude and those south are labeled south degree latitudes Latitude is about 111 km apart

Longitude Longitude is the distance in degrees east or west of the prime meridian The prime meridian is 0 degrees longitude and the rest are numbered from east or west

Time Zones Earth is divided into 24 zones because it takes the Earth 24 hours to rotate once Each time zone is approximately 15 degrees wide There is an International Date Line where you either lose or gain a day when you cross it
