2. What is maths?
Teach to count then we take away the numbers then we make it totally incomprehensible – all the time we tell them – maths is fun!

3. This is maths To me – this is maths.

How do they know that if you are in a heavy lorry at the bottom, you have the power in the engine to get to the top?
Whats more, if you are at the top, how do they know that the brakes are strong enough to stop you at the bottom?
What an extraordinary feat of engineering – how many metal bars do they need to be the strings that hold the bridge up? How thick? How strong?
How did they make the curve? How do they know that a car going at 70mph has the steering ability to stay on the road and not fly off?
How string do the crash barriers have to be?
Where are the weak spot? I’ll try to avoid them!

This is maths too – How does this, do this, do this? I spent 12 hours in one of these recently – how extraordinary that they can cater for 300 people for 12 hours whilst 5 miles in the air? Its 57 metres long, 16 metres high, wingspan 60 metres an weighs 110 tonnes empty and 220 tonnes full. It travels at 600 miles per hour for hours an hours.
9000 aeroplanes in sky at 9.00am Weds morning – how come they don’t crash? Is the sky big enough?

This is maths too – a simple problem around since early 18th century. Konigsberg is a town in East Prussia. There are 7 bridges. A problem for the mathematician Leonard Euler
Can you stand anywhere and then cross each bridge once and only once?
Very quickly it becomes this, then this then this…………and with a pencil and paper see if you can draw it without taking your pencil off the page.

And for the further mathematicians – the cube root of 1 isn’t just 1………….there are two others! Something to do with a mathematician from 17th Century France. Called De Moivre

Paper 1 – Pure mathematics.
Paper 2 – Pure mathematics and mechanics.
Paper 3 –Pure mathematics and statistics.
Each of these is worth ⅓ of the total award.

13. Should you study Advanced Level Maths?
Maths - Set 1 pupils should be able to easily cope with Advanced Level Mathematics – but you will need to score at least a “7” at GCSE to be successful on the course.
Set 2 pupils will find Advanced level Maths difficult but with hard work may well cope. You will need a “7” at GCSE to be successful on the course

14. Should you study Further Maths?
You will need to be a top set student. If you are in the top 15 of a top set then we advise very strongly that you take this course. It is considered the cream of the A level courses and the one that the brightest, stand out students take. You will need to score at least a “7” at GCSE.
