In 1955, Emmett Louis Till, an African-American boy was murdered in Mississippi at 14 for reportedly flirting with a white woman. He was beaten, his eyes gouged out, shot in the head, and then his body was dumped in the river. His killers were acquitted in a trial in Mississippi, but months later, their confession to the kidnapping and murder was published in Life Magazine . This tragic incident was one of the pivotal moments in the Civil Rights movement

After you’ve all read it (quietly – to yourselves), discuss it briefly as a class.
What happens?
Were you surprised?
How does this relate to the images and the video clip?
Think about how fiction depicts real life. Can you think of other examples of this?
Why is the title important? Would the story have changed for you if the title was “The Corpse”?
Why does the story end with that particular line? What else is this story the end of?

7. Individual Work
Using the handouts, answer the questions on “The Flowers” in complete sentences after going back and annotating the short story. Turn in your annotations and the answers to the questions at the end of class.
