1 Elements of A Narrative
CHARACTERIZATION

2 HEY!!! I’m TALKING TO YOU! USE WORDS LIKE SAID, REPLIED, STATED, etc……
Dialogue always uses PROPER PUNCTUATION. COMMA FIRST, QUOTES SECOND, PERIOD INSIDE. USE WORDS LIKE SAID, REPLIED, STATED, etc…… Jared’s eyes opened wide as he said, “I can’t believe that just happened!” Karen replied with a harsh tone, “You shouldn’t even be here.”

3 CHAPTER 22, THE JUNGLE BY UPTON SINCLAIR
HOW DO I WRITE DIALOGUE? "How did it happen?" he asked. Marija scarcely heard him in her agony. He repeated the question, louder and yet more harshly. "He fell off the sidewalk!" she wailed. The sidewalk in front of the house was a platform made of half-rotten boards, about five feet above the level of the sunken street. "How did he come to be there?" he demanded. "He went--he went out to play," Marija sobbed, her voice choking her. "We couldn't make him stay in. He must have got caught in the mud!“ "Are you sure that he is dead?" he demanded. CHAPTER 22, THE JUNGLE BY UPTON SINCLAIR

4 Dialogue… Recording conversation
COMMA QUOTE RULE…. Before quote marks, there is a Comma. Don’t forget it. I simply asked, “When will this lesson be over?” Dialogue is written the way the person speaks. Thoughts are always italicized. When will this lesson be over? She groaned inside.
